Scout the Goose's Sudden Death at Riverside Cemetery: What Happened? (2026)

The Unexpected Passing of Riverside Cemetery's Goose Scout

Riverside Cemetery's beloved resident goose, Scout, met an untimely end just one month after her arrival. The young Emden goose, who came to the cemetery to be a companion to fellow goose Frankie, was found dead on Sunday, leaving the community in a state of surprise and concern.

According to Riverside Cemetery General Manager Kelly Schott, Scout appeared healthy on Saturday, showing no signs of illness. However, on Sunday, her sudden death was discovered, prompting an investigation into the cause.

Scout's body was taken to the state veterinarian in Des Moines for a necropsy, which will determine the exact cause of death. The necropsy will include checks for avian flu and other potential factors, such as stress or external influences like food poisoning.

Scout's arrival at Riverside Cemetery in November was intended to provide companionship for Frankie, who had been alone since October when his female companion, Blossom, was tragically killed in a vehicle accident. The cemetery's management had planned to find a new companion for Frankie in the spring, prioritizing the health and well-being of the flock.

The recent bird flu outbreak, known as H5N1, has raised concerns. In December, there were reports of migrating geese in Iowa affected by the virus. Schott assured that no birds at Riverside showed symptoms of the illness at that time. The cemetery's staff will continue to monitor the flock, and any additional bird deaths will be promptly addressed.

Despite some instances of birds appearing dizzy, they were able to recover and leave. Schott emphasized that the staff is not currently worried, but the incident has served as a reminder of the potential risks associated with bird flu.

Since taking on her role as manager in January 2025, Schott has experienced bird deaths, including two geese that were found frozen to the pond. She attributed these incidents to the natural environment and the challenges of managing a non-captive flock. The loss of Scout has been particularly difficult, as she was a well-liked and friendly goose who enjoyed her time at the cemetery, especially paddling on the lake.
