Imagine your peaceful neighborhood, a place you chose for its amenities and open spaces, suddenly facing a drastic transformation! That's the reality for residents in Spanish Springs, Nevada, where a beloved golf course at Red Hawk is on the chopping block, potentially making way for a massive new housing development. Tom Ciesynski, a resident, voiced his apprehension, stating, "This was a 1994 master plan community, and it wasn’t designed for that type of situation." He's right to be concerned! Introducing nearly 800 new homes could dramatically alter that balance.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Foothills at Wingfield Springs Homeowners Association recently held a crucial meeting to hash out these potential changes. Ciesynski elaborated, "This is an opportunity for residents within the community to give public comment to the board with regard to the decision by the owners to close the Lakes golf course out here and put homes on 17 or 18 holes." The formal application for these modifications has been submitted by the Red Hawk Land Company to the City of Sparks, signaling that this is more than just a rumor.

Residents are raising several red flags. Ciesynski highlighted, "Densely populating a Master plan community isn’t set up for the traffic. You’ve got sewer capacity issues, you’ve got water issues and protected wetlands and wildlife." He painted a vivid picture of the current environment, mentioning, "I play golf out here with eagles flying over the top of me, falcons, owls. All types of wildlife. This is a very well-thought-out, planned community. To lose this now would be devastating not only for Spanish Springs, but the City of Sparks."

And this is the part most people miss... While the City of Sparks acknowledges that the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has recently completed widening projects on Pyramid Highway, aiming to boost traffic mobility and safety, the sheer volume of new residents could still strain existing infrastructure. The city staff are now diligently reviewing these applications, and their recommendations will be presented to the city planning commission and city council.

The residents' plea is clear: "We want recreation out here. We want golf, we want trails, we want open land, we want protected wetlands, and we want wildlife. It takes collaboration between the owners and the residents out here to find workable solutions for both parties." This sentiment underscores a desire for compromise and a recognition that a thriving community needs to balance development with preservation.
