The Wade Trophy, an esteemed accolade in women's college basketball, has been celebrating exceptional talent since its inception in 1978. Named after the legendary Lily Margaret Wade, this award recognizes the top player in Division I basketball, and throughout its history, it has been associated with some of the sport's most remarkable figures.
Carol Blazejowski was the first recipient of this prestigious honor, paving the way for future stars. Shortly thereafter, a name synonymous with the Phoenix Mercury emerged: Nancy Lieberman. Winning the Wade Trophy consecutively in 1979 and 1980, Lieberman later joined the Mercury’s roster in 1997, making her mark as a prominent player. During her time in the league, she was selected as the second pick in the elite draft and maintained averages of 2.6 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.3 rebounds per game. Known affectionately as "Lady Magic," Lieberman had already established a stellar career, having clinched a championship in the Women's American Basketball Association (WABA) and earned the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Following Lieberman, Lynette Woodard became the next Wade Trophy winner. She showcased her skills with teams like the Cleveland Rockers and the Detroit Shock during the WNBA's formative years. As time went on, several other players claimed the trophy, but another notable figure linked to the Mercury also took the honor home. Cheryl Miller, who won the award in 1985, might not have played for the Mercury, but she made an indelible impact as the team’s inaugural coach. Over her four-season tenure, she recorded an impressive coaching record of 70-52, further solidifying her legacy in the sport.
In 1989, Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil emerged victorious, becoming another Wade Trophy winner who spent a season with the Mercury after being drafted in 1999. During her stint, she averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists, contributing to the team’s efforts.
Moving forward to 2003, the illustrious Diana Taurasi captured the Wade Trophy, asserting her dominance on the court with an average of 17.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. Taurasi played a pivotal role in leading UConn to a championship that year, followed by another title in her senior year, showcasing her incredible talent and work ethic.
Brittney Griner, another phenomenal player, secured the Wade Trophy in both 2012 and 2013. In 2012, she guided Baylor to a national championship while boasting impressive stats: 23.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.2 blocks, and 1.6 assists. The following year, she continued to shine, averaging 23.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 4.1 blocks, and 2.4 assists in her final collegiate season, eventually becoming the top pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft.
