The tech giants' carbon footprint is growing, and it's not just their own operations that are to blame. As Microsoft, Amazon, and Google expand their datacentres to meet the demands of cloud services and AI, their collective emissions are skyrocketing. In the past year alone, these companies' carbon emissions have increased by nearly a fifth, driven largely by the construction of new datacentres. This boom in infrastructure is a stark reversal of their previous efforts to cut emissions, and it raises questions about the true sustainability of their cloud-based solutions.
The numbers are staggering. In the financial year ending March 2026, these three tech giants emitted a staggering 119m metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. That's roughly equivalent to the emissions of the Czech Republic in 2024. And it's not just their own operations that are to blame. As companies migrate to their clouds, they are outsourcing their digital/AI carbon footprint to these tech giants, further exacerbating the problem. Cecilia Rikap, an economics professor at University College London, warns that these companies' claims of ecological friendliness are mere marketing strategies. Governments, she says, should be wary of these expanding carbon footprints when considering the very same companies' AI solutions for addressing the ecological crisis.
The datacentre boom is a global phenomenon, with tech giants spending an estimated $765 billion this year on building AI datacentres. This infrastructure is being built in locations from Norway to North Tyneside, fuelling a drastic increase in emissions. The Uptime Institute estimates that big datacentre projects announced last year would consume 1.3% of the world's electricity usage, a near-doubling of current demand. And it's not just the power consumption that's a concern. The lack of carbon credits available on global markets to offset these emissions is a further challenge, as Shaolei Ren, a professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Riverside, points out.
The implications of this boom are far-reaching. As demand for AI tools and investment in the models that underpin them increases, so too does the pressure on these tech giants to maintain their emissions targets. With net zero emissions goals looming, the question remains: can these companies truly reconcile their growing carbon footprint with their promises of sustainability? The answer lies in the balance between technological innovation and environmental responsibility, a delicate tightrope walk that these companies must navigate carefully.
